Disney Orders Another Season of Star Wars Rebels
For those wondering if Star Wars Rebels will survive on Disney XD, StarWars.com has reported that Rebels has been picked up for a second season by Disney Channel, one day before the series premiere. The series has been getting glowing early reviews, including our own, and now viewers can rest assured that the Ghost crew’s story will continue for a good, long time.
Disney Channels Worldwide President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh said of the second season order, “The global expectations for this series could not have been any higher. And I am proud to say that the team at Lucasfilm has delivered something that has surpassed even that incredibly high bar – artistically and thematically.”
The animated series, which takes place 5 years before A New Hope, focuses on a small, rag-tag band of heroes standing against the evil Empire when no one else is willing.
“We all love making ‘Rebels,’ so we couldn’t be happier that it’s moving into a second season,” says Lucasfilm VP of Creative Development, Kiri Hart. “Our fantastic creative team is dreaming up new stories for the crew of the Ghost that will expand their experience of the galaxy and deepen their heroes’ journeys. The fan response to the show has been amazing, humbling and inspiring. We’re looking forward to the adventure ahead.”

Buried in the story is the fact that Greg Weisman is no longer working on the show after Season One, with Henry Gilroy joining the team as Co-Executive Producer and Supervising Writer. Gilroy has also written a few episodes for Rebels’ first season, having previously been head writer on The Clone Wars’ first season. I wonder why Weisman decided to leave, but this explains his conspicuous absence from recent Rebels panels and talks.
It’s not stated in the article, it says the team INCLUDES those guys but it doesn’t discount Greg Weisman also being part of the team. That said, yeah, it’s telling that he’s not there and they probably did part ways – how awful would that be? ANOTHER great show by Greg Weisman where he and Disney have to part ways on bad terms.
Henry Gilroy’s credits are extensive, but he doesn’t seem to stick to any show too well, I see The Tick and Batman:TAS on there but not many. He did write Rise of the Old Masters for Rebels though, and I gave that episode a mountain of praise for storytelling, so that’s at least promising.
