Nice teardown, “no user-serviceable parts” is likely in the manual. It appears the head turns by moving the entire drive system inside, that it’s magnetically static to the drive system, you can see the blue orientation light moving with the head both in the clip of BB-8 in his cradle, and in the teardown at 1:01 in the video. The prop shown at SW Celebration had a more advanced, independent system for the head, I believe.
