Anybody know what’s with Bush’s religion?
I generally don’t spend too much time thinking about anybody else’s religion, and before this week, all I could remember about George W’s religion was that it was different from his father’s. But a few days ago, I was flipping channels and stopped for a second on PBS which was airing a documentary on the 2 presidential candidates. They finished up a segment on Kerry & Nixon or something, I came in too late to be sure, and then they were talking about the early ’80s with George W. and Laura at the time when he was in charge of an oil company that was starting to flounder due to plummeting oil prices. They showed some photos of a younger W, I flipped the channels away for a moment, and when I got back, they were interviewing a friend of W’s from that time. I was just about to change again when he started talking about W’s interest in a Revival meeting that had been advertising in the local paper about coming to town soon – I had watched Elmer Gantry a few weeks ago, a movie which deals with the darker side of this midway-meets-religion thing, so I was curious and stuck around. This guy said that W had seen the advertising for this Revival show (I don’t know if it was in a tent or not) that “starred” this specific guy, I didn’t remember his name even though it was something religious, and when the Revival came to town, W, Laura, and this friend guy went to the show. W was so moved that after the show, he got himself introduced to the show’s preacher and they, the friend, and Laura, all went to a nearby Holiday Inn coffee shop where W and the Revival preacher talked for a long time about the meeting and about faith and whatnot, and ended the conversation with the preacher having W join him in saying a “sinner’s prayer”. The friend says that W had been having trouble with his alcoholism at the time and this Revival meeting and coffee shop conversation with its “star” preacher afterwards is what turned W to this religion.
Unfortunately, right then I got a call and missed the rest of the documentary except for Kerry’s earlier days in the Senate, and W’s first meeting with Karl Rove. As I don’t really know that much about George W’s religion or stuff like that, but he is the president and Revival tent show type meetings seem very interesting, I am curious and would like anybody who has some insight into this to fill in the blanks.
