I was thinking about John Edwards’ stump speech theme from 2004 – the one that resounded the most with me, which I still believe is the correct way to evaluate the progression of the United States.

First, how should we define progress in the United States?

I’d answer that by saying our ideal that anyone can be born here and then have real opportunity for achieving success.

This assumes all things about an individual are equal.

They are just NOT equal though.

Many people are just impatient, stupid, or unable to learn for different BIOLOGICAL reasons. They do not have the same abilities. Some will only be able to make inferior progress in life because of their limitations.

So this statement that if you’re born here, you have equal opportunities to succeed is not true, because all men are NOT created equally.
