I’ve been eyeing this since Force Friday, but held off until I saw the film and could pick it up at Disneyland with my annual pass 20% discount. $30 down to $24, it’s worth it, and less than half the price of the Ultimate FX Hasbro version.

It’s pretty neat, and appears to be better than either of the Hasbro versions, and maybe better than the Force FX version in some ways.

Disney Store’s version of Kylo Ren’s lightsaber has the LED light up blade with the lights laddering up and down when you turn it on and off, respectively. The vent side blades fade on when the main blade gets to the top, it looks slick.

The hilt has a nice sculpt and uses lots of bronze paint for accents. Based on photos of them, the paint looks nicer than any of Hasbro’s, including the Force FX. The red wire running from the exposed section to the base is a separate pieces that’s embedded into the hilt, so it’s not floppy but it’s definitely not simple. The exposed section at the bottom is a separate piece cast in silver plastic. The bottom has the red cap sculpted detail. There’s some bronze weathering, but could have more.

That open area near the bottom is really impressive, it’s not something you normally would see on a toy saber and gives it an air of authenticity. The saber also has a nice weight, not too heavy for kids but not hollow and plasticky either.

The blades are shot in red plastic, mostly opaque, and have a fiery sculpt to them, which none of the Hasbro sabers have. The main blade’s fiery sculpt fades to smooth halfway up for dueling, which works for me. The side blades are tapered down, again Hasbro’s don’t do this at any price. The blade is about 8″ shorter than the Force FX blade, so it’s kiddie stuff, but it seems pleasing to me.

The saber has a very small line of production run numbers printed on the back, and the copyright and safety stuff is very small embossed on the back, not at all intrusive. Turns out there’s a long embossed FCC paragraph on the front so unobtrusive I only noticed it looking for more detailing. The back side of the saber has some screw bosses with screws set deep enough that you don’t really notice them, the only one that stands out is the flush one for the 3 AA batteries (included).

There’s an on/off/try-me switch near the bottom sculpted to match the detail component without making it too difficult to find. The activation button is the spherical button part of the saber’s design near the top.

The lights are nicely bright, there are darker spots in between, similar to the old FX sabers and Hasbro’s Ultimate FX saber, but as this is the wonky fire saber it seems ok by me.

The blade is slightly off center on all of the ones I saw, coming out of the hilt at the left a few degrees. This seems to be because of the vibration feature, pressing the blade against something firmly will cause the saber to act like it’s clashing, vibrating the hilt, making sparking sounds, and having the blades blink. It’s pretty fun, I gather the previous 2 Disney Store sabers have it as well. I think it might straighten itself if rested in a different angle for a while.

The saber kicks on with movie-accurate sounds, they don’t sound a thing like the classic lightsabers of old (except the shut down sound is similar), it kind of explodes on with sound. The audio comes out of a speaker at the lower opening, it’s fine for the holder without being obnoxiously loud for everyone else. The saber will idle with a mean hum and some spitting sounds as if it’s not quite working right, it’ll cycle through and you can hear the cycle break fade as it recycles about 10 seconds later; the saber will auto power down after about 45 seconds if you don’t wave it.

There are motion sounds for waving, a crash sound when you hit something, and the aforementioned clash sound if you hold the blade against something. All in all, fairly satisfying.

Packaging is simple, the hilt is entirely exposed and left in try me mode, a long cardboard backer holds the blade. It claims to have instructions but those are just warnings about not mixing batteries, and doesn’t mention that you have to physically press the blade so it moves the floating collar to get it to vibrate and clash.

All in all, if you’re going to get one Kylo Ren saber toy, this is the best one in a lot of ways, and it’s the cheapest at $30. You can see it here at the Disney Store website, but the pics suck and they want an extra $2.50 on top of their shipping so don’t buy it online.
