Just realized this – quite apart from the question of “who knew about Luke when” (and Vader clearly knows about him at the beginning of ESB), the Emperor accedes to Vader’s suggestion that they turn Luke to the Dark Side. He also seems quite unconcerned that Vader clearly knows something about this “son of Anakin Skywalker” that he hasn’t told the Emperor (“he’s just a boy”).
So, how do we reconcile the Emperor’s enthusiasm for turning Luke, if (as established in the Prequels) there can only be two Sith at any time? What has become accepted, it seems, is that both intend to replace the other with Luke, but this doesn’t seem to make sense, given the above dialog. The dialog makes it clear that Vader and Palpatine desire, collectively, to make an “ally” of Luke. The implication seems pretty clear that there is no necessity for either of them to be “replaced” by Luke.
The “there can be only two” requirement seems like another one of those things that George thought up for the PT, in spite of the fact that it seems to directly contradict something that is said in the OT. The surprising thing is that, when the changes were made to the scene in Empire, it wasn’t made to “agree” with the PT more closely.
The new dialog in ESB connects back to the PT by mentioning Anakin by name, and everybody is pointing at that dialog knowingly, seeing some sort of plotting of Vader and Palpatine against each other, but the dialog that has always existed in ESB doesn’t imply a “break” between the Emperor and Vader at all. The first sign of this was actually at the end of the duel in ESB (Vader plotting against the Emperor).
