My Count Dooku sucks. (Incredibly mild film spoilders.)
Ah Count Dooku, a great character in the movie, and the potential to be a great figure. Sadly, he’s not everything he could be…
I got Count Dooku today from my father who was visiting another part of the country brought him back for me, as we don’t have him here yet.
This figure is TALL. He’s the same height as a battledroid. Christopher Lee is tall though, so maybe this is the right height. I don’t own an Anakin or Obi Wan so it’s hard to say.
The sculpt is fairly decent. Dooku doesn’t wear fancy clothes, so there’s not much to do… though the folds in his clothes on this figure seem a little too “sharp” for my liking.
The paint is fine… the hair and beard are nice… but he looks like he’s crying because of the terrible job on the eyes. Maybe it’s just my figure, but you can’t see very much white in his eyes, just two little black dots. His expression is that of sadness. The picture on his blister looks great… I wish it matched up.
The articulation is pretty terrible comparied to the other AOTC figures. His one wrist moves, and his shoulders do.. but that’s it on his arms… it’s better then the old POTF toys of course, but when I look at Saesee Tinn or Kitt Fisto, then I’m disapointed.
Part of his articulation problem stems from the fact he has a very very stupid feature. Squeeze his legs and his swings his saber… the feature does work, but it comes off as very clunky. The mechanism seems cheap and I fear that I will break it if I do it too much. It also makes his legs and arm hard to move because of mechanism… a spring mechanism like Zam Zessel’s quick draw would have been much much better.
Dooku’s cape sucks. It falls off at the drop of a hat. That’s all there is to say about that.
His lightsaber is incredibly puzzling to me. First of all, for the first time I’ve seen since before POTF2 figures, it’s made of solid plastic, and not the clear stuff. What the hell is up with that? Second of all, unlike every other lightsaber from my AOTC jedi figures, the blade does not come off. What the hell? Finally, he’s packed with a green saber, I guess the one Anakin used against him. This one is clear, has the removable blade, and is even magnetic to boot! He didn’t use this saber in the film (though I hear in early drafts of the script he did.) so why not save the money from this saber, and not put it in, and just make his real saber not suck?
He also comes with a Sidious hologram. This is never in the movie at all, but it’s kind of nice to have. Problem is, it’s much too tall for sidious… and I mean much too tall.
Bottom line is, there are worse out there, but if you’re like me and buy toys only to open and display, then wait for a better one to come along… there will probably be “Final Battle Dooku” or something coming along eventually.
