Now filming! Cast and crew officially announced
Episode VIII is now filming, and it’s got a sweet announcement video.
Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is written and directed by Rian Johnson and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcomes back cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and talented newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.
So pretty much every TFA character is coming back:
• Luke Skywalker
• General Leia Organa
• Kylo Ren
• Rey
• Finn
• Poe Dameron
• Maz Kanata
• General Hux
• C-3PO
• Captain Phasma
• Supreme Leader SnokeMost of them were obvious, but I’m a little surprised that Maz is coming back. Maybe they’ll show her using the Force this time, teaching Rey alongside Luke.
Notably absent: Kenny Baker and Peter Mayhew. TFA’s cast announcement included Kenny Baker, though I believe he’s only a consultant in the final credits and he didn’t perform in the film. And Peter Mayhew had a few *cough* “stunt doubles,” so I wonder if he even came back at all this time.
Benicio Del Toro has been talking about his involvement for some time, but he’ll be great. It was speculated he’d be a villain. Maybe another knight of Ren who steps up after Kylo’s failure in TFA, or a high-ranking First Order officer? He’d also make a good underworld criminal.
Laura Dern is a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. People are already speculating she’ll be Mara Jade, and I suspect they will continue to do so long after the film reveals she’s not.
Kelly Marie Tran is a relative newcomer who has mostly done web comedy. There were rumors that they were casting a new female as a potential love interest for Finn, so maybe she’ll fill that role. She’s around that age, anyway, so if there’s no romance then she’ll probably still go on an adventure with Finn and/or Poe while Rey is doing her Jedi training, similar to how the two groups of heroes were separated in both ESB and AOTC.
