Styles of the Star Wars Galaxy
When we leave Anakin in Revenge of the Sith, his hair resembles something out of the Earthly 1970s. When we pick the story back up with Luke, his hair also resembles something from the Earthly 1970s. There is a roughly 20 year gap between the end of ROTS and the beginning of ANH.
As we on Earth have seen in 2008, the kids have (for some ungodly reason) taken to growing their hair out to Leigh Garrett style lengths as we haven’t seen since the late ’70s. So the last time we really saw those hairstyles here on Earth was roughly pre-MTV in 1983. So that means WE’VE seen a 20 year gap (or so) between the long hair style and it’s return.
The Star Wars on screen universe has emulated this pattern.
So the question is, how could that be? Pop Culture spreads quickly on Earth because it is one planet, with a rapidly evolving communication system that allows one corner of the globe’s population to know what the other is doing.
But in the Star Wars Universe, we’re talking about an entire galaxy! While we could assume that the core systems would have a great deal of interconnectivity in terms of info-sharing, an outer world like Tatooine wouldn’t likely be privy to the ever-changing fashion trends that commerce needs to profit from. A backwater like Tatoonine would base its “fashion” around practicality, not the latest style as seen on Coruscant.
So why would Luke be sporting long Leigh Garrett hair on Tatooine twenty years after his father did the same thing on Coruscant? Does fashion ever change in Star Wars or does it change as it does on Earth, only we missed that intervening twenty years between Anakin and Luke?
