Well, for being a so beloved game over the world, here on SSG it seems to be just we too, Maradona. I guess those billion+ TV audiences will be off by about a billion+ this year... But I'd root for Argentina and Brazil this weekend.

Indeed. Sunday's game is supposed to be one of the most watched events in the history of world. Let's see how many actually tune in. Go Americas!

I can't ever remember Brazil losing two games in a row, much less a combined 10-1. Over the past few days, I've read several inspiring articles about Messi and his youth that have added even more desire in me for an Argentine victory tomorrow.

Well, BCJ, you called that there would be extra time correctly. Better to lose a match on a goal like that than in a penalty shoot out. I'm sad to see the tournament end, but ready to get on with my summer. I scheduled almost everything around this tournament, even traveling to visit my family for the opening ten days. I guess this thread can rest for a few years after this...

Argentina had some chances, mostly in regular time; I think Messi will replay that last free kick over and over forever. :( More blood than I expected in a soccer match; and the German player who just mysteriously disappeared after being escorted off the field was NOT aware he was in Brazil, I think. :tired:

The US dominated the Germans in really tight, tactical match. The semifinals were a sort of replay of WWII - Allies (USA/England) v Axis (Germany/Japan). Sunday's final should be really strong.

In the Copa America, the other international tournament happening this week, Argentina punished Paraguay 6-1 yesterday with Messi playing the role of distributor instead of just scorer, creating five of the six goals in the onslaught. They play host country Chile in what should be an entertaining final on Saturday. While I would love to see Messi lift a championship trophy with the national team, I wonder if playing against the hosts offers much expectation that it will happen this year.

Well, I'll echo the now-common reactions I've heard, and say, if the US was going to lose to any country's team, Japan would be that team.
But I do not echo my own comments from 2011 this year. Go USA, and win today!

[edit] Wow. Then, WOW. A little later: wow! And WOW! All in the first 16 minutes. Great job!

I enjoy (but in all honesty, do not love) watching international futbol, but a nil-nil end to a championship match always leaves me feeling a bit empty. Two red cards to go 10-on-10 most of the match? And that PK shootout...

I still can't believe what I saw. T&T was at the bottom of the table and somehow kept the US out. Their first goal was spectacular, though. We need about three more players like Pulisic to get something meaningful going.

This morning's first match broke that trend with a 1-0 scoreline. The second match so far has even fewer goals. Today's final match should be interesting. Fingers crossed that Messi has better luck tomorrow. I'd love to see him win the Cup this year, but I wonder how far he can carry his team this time.

Iceland was inspired and Messi was imprecise in another entertaining match today. Australia's grit deserved better than a loss to France. Peru and Denmark had a rollicking back and forth affair. Croatia and Nigeria are up next on a four match Saturday that has robbed me of sleep since 3AM PST.

Today's matches were all well paced and competitive with two upsets against powerhouses Germany and Brazil. That's good for the sport. I know a lot of people are put off by low scores, which all of today's games had, but I don't mind hard fought, low scoring affairs.

I don't mind 1-1; it's the nil-nil games that are tough. Sure, they might be defensive gems of strategy, but you just gots to score at least one time each! Mexico over Germany; I did not see that one coming. Go, Norte Americano!
