Somewhat normal again: crossword, laundry, sprinklers, recycling (am over $150 for the school year now), gas, library. Home to get my gotta-finish grading and lesson planning done, read some, watched some futbol de universidad.
Effectively, this day: same crossword, laundry, sprinklers, recycling; but also replacing watch batteries (local shop is charging more per battery now, but I want him to stay in business ), grocery and book shopping. Dinner was take-out (and their portions are smaller... hmm). Got the have-to grading and planning done again, plus the ubiquitous college football and (not as much) reading. Turned in early (about 8pm) since wasn't feeling well.
Was tired from the day before's freeway rush hours (not used to that; could NOT survive having to do that every. Single. Day. for work... ), but I still awoke around 5am. Laundry loads, crossword puzzle. Out to recycle, pick up items from school, shop for Hallmark ornaments, home to grade and watch the TV or listen to the radio. Got simple takeout as dinner. Experienced "rain" on the drive home (it was water, it did fall from the sky, I did have to turn on my wipers once).
Didn't need to run sprinklers, as the steady rain most of the day did that for me and SoCal. Recycled (over $250 now on the school year), picked up tickets to a play showing locally, shopped without purchasing anything (sorry, you local business coffers) except groceries. Home to grade and lesson plan, watch sports TV (some wins, some losses, some "eh" ). Got fast food as dinner.
Did some much needed exercise in the morning, followed by laundry, house cleaning, all before heading to visit my mom. Took her to do a bunch of shopping. Watched, then listened to the Dodgers pull one out of the bag and defeat the Brewers to even their series. Drove out to Claremont to attend a ceremony honoring my cousin's military service - he flew in from Alaska to partake. Had dinner with the family in the Claremont Village area. Listened, then watched to USC defeat Colorado before finally getting to sleep.
Up earlier to get gas (before the lines grow), then to recycling. Home to then leave for lunch at Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner restaurant (near the theme park of the similar name). Back home to grade and watch mostly sad results of sporting events.
Was asked to drive part of the MUN group to a conference at RCC (you know; I always thought that it was called Riverside Community College, but it's City College; nice campus, saw the band practicing [the RCC marching band was featured in the video for Weird Al's "Sports Song"]). Was there until after 5pm (got grading and a little reading done), then returned the vans to school that loaned them. Got takeout as dinner, was tired, changed a few clocks and went to...
Getting up to drive to a location by 5:40am, for a weekend bus tour up the CA coast: Solvang, San Simeon (and Hearst Castle) were the main stops. Enjoyable, nice weather (aside from a brief downpour), good food (dinner, snacks).
There's some funky stuff going on here at TFG... just had almost my entire post deleted while typing. Grr...
Here's it in shorter words (just in case)... lots of normal Saturday stuff, getting ready for final exams in two weeks, went (twice) to a B&N book faire fundraiser for my school, worked on a Christmas letter, recycling is over $400 so far on the school year (got 11 responses for the first deadline for the scholarship)
Some sames (am over $460 now in recycling), sealed a potential roof leak (I can't remember the last time I was up on the roof), grocery shopped, graded all my last grading pre-final exams, watched some TV (mostly listened to music on the TV, but not MTV).
So I walked over to Downtown LA and participated in the march for education. Cool way to get 20,000+ steps in a day and the weather was perfect for it. I doubt this march will prevent a teacher strike in a few weeks, but I really hope it does.
Up to head out for some last shopping (mainly stocking stuffers) before The Crowds lurched into being. Home to read a little, watch a little TV, grade some (ugh), launder some stuff.
[edit: 12/30/18] Put out trash cans since trash day will be delayed these 2 holiday weekends, tossed in a loud of laundry, went out to get gas/make a gift exchange/visit the bank/shop for non-gift purchases/drop off items at the school. Home to read some, TV some, relax more.
I wanted to be productive: returned to a local (within 20 miles) antiques/collectibles district that is very much reduced and different than when I was in full-on collecting mode 20-some years ago (no surprise that it's evolved over that time) to find that the specific store I'd hoped to visit for the first time... was closed (not out-of-business, just not open for some reason). Other shops along the way (only bought a book and a CD... which when I got home, stopped playing after track 15... sigh). Reading, grocery shopping, staying in from the rain (not too heavy now), electronic file organizing, getting used to the fact that holiday break is ending and a return to school and teaching is upon me.
More of the typical recycling/laundry/grading & planning/gas fill-up/shopping. Tried to go to the opening of a Black Bear Diner in town, but it was apparently just a soft opening for families of employees; so it was to Red Robin with a gift card instead.
Not supposed to get up before 5am on a Saturday! Well, you do, if you are taking high schoolers to an MUN conference driving in a van down by the atmospheric river. The rain was mostly cooperative, the loose gas cap (I never fueled up at all) warning light was a concern, I got some grading done in between good colleague conversations, and the students did quite well. Home later than I expected, so just dinner scarfed down and TV before sleepy-time (which, was interrupted by jaw pain again; uh oh).
I got to sleep in... and I actually did so! To beat the expected rain, I dropped off recycling yesterday (broke the $600 mark on the school year, too). Graded the got-to items (dropped them and other stuff at school, to beat the expected rain for this week as well). Staying home (that rain... you know) to do laundry, build a desk that's been waiting for a few weeks, read some, watched some addicting TV (musical retrospectives by decades).
I was supposed to help out at a 5K race, but it was cancelled due to weather conditions. Weather actually wasn’t too bad as the second wave of snow didn’t arrive until this afternoon. That left me free to participate in an X-Wing Miniatures tournament. I lost all three games, but did better in each successive game. I did win my league match the night before.
I spent most of yesterday catching up on Toy Fair news, mainly the Star Wars and Power Rangers stuff going on with Hasbro. I've got to admit, it feels pretty good seeing Power Ranger toys being done with the quality we've come to expect from Star Wars toys as opposed to the inaccurate and barely painted roided-up messes that Bandai of America was putting out for 98% of their lineups.
Day 2 of a 4-day weekend, but the rain forecasts (some heavy days, too) made a travel plan or outdoors visits not the best ideas. Laundry and grading typical stuff. Read some, dealt with now-ongoing new computer issues (basically, the machine is keeping the desk it's on from flying away into the atmosphere), grocery shopping, lunch out as fast food.
