Imperial Shadow Squadron

Rated 5.00 out of 5 based on 1 customer rating

Shadow scouts ride speeder bikes on their covert missions.  Commanders and troopers in this elite squadron wear specialized cloaking armor that makes them virtually invisible.  Their speeder bikes have similar technology, making these troopers very successful at ambushing their targets.

1 review for Imperial Shadow Squadron

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

Shadow stormtroopers and shadow scouts aren’t actually all that common in the Expanded Universe, but darn it if they don’t make cool, easy repaints. These troopers have never looked better than in Target’s exclusive Imperial Shadow Squadron set, which includes two 6” Black Series figures, one vehicle, and four blasters.

The Shadow Stormtrooper Commander is a repaint of the twice-released Black Series Sandtrooper (orange pauldron, 2013; black pauldron, 2014). This time, his armor is black, his bodysuit and pauldron are dark gray, and the silver and deep black details on his helmet pop quite nicely. The updated torso, leg, and belt from the basic 6” Stormtrooper (The Black Series, 2014) would have made this figure more accurate as an all-purpose trooper—the details seen here are exclusive to the Tunisia costume—but that’s hardly a dealbreaker. He includes the same two big rifles and the standard E-11 blaster, molded in an unpainted gray that doesn’t look quite as slick as previous releases. He doesn’t include the Sandtrooper backpack, but he still has the hole in his back so he can borrow one from a buddy. The pauldron is removable if you’d rather just have a standard trooper; with the pauldron, this figure has no true 3 ¾” equivalent unless you just throw one on from the umpteen Sandtrooper releases.

The Speeder Bike and Shadow Scout are, of course, black versions of the Speeder Bike with Biker Scout set that was released just a few months ago. Some storm commandos in the Expanded Universe, and one of several released by Hasbro (Clone Commandos – Evolutions, Legacy Collection, 2009), feature a redesigned helmet and armor, but this figure features no new tooling. The Scout follows the same black-and-gray pattern as the Stormtrooper Commander, with a nice shiny silver Imperial cog on his chest. There’s also a striking red stripe on his back gear that looks great and matches a button on his bike. Where the original release was a bit too rubbery at the joints, this one feels much sturdier without losing any of his predecessor’s poseability or function. The scout can put the included gray pistol in his ankle holster, but it falls out a bit too easily.

With three silver Imperial cogs on its body, the speeder bike itself adheres closely to the 3 ¾” version released as a 2006 San Diego Comic-Con exclusive. The handlebars are warped out of the package (and in the photos), but posing the scout properly takes care of that after some time. It has the same design perks and flaws of the prior release, with a rotating lower cannon and opening flaps. There is no painted battle damage, so either this bike is fresh off the rack or the shadow squadron is just that good. The included stand can display the bike at three different heights and allows for a lot of cool posing options.

Why Hasbro chose a shot of the Death Star hangar from A New Hope for the box’s background is a mystery, but it’s definitely nice to see more graphics in The Black Series packaging. (Not to mention that these figures would have been completely lost in the dark package without it.) Individually, a Sandtrooper is $20 and the Speeder Bike with Biker Scout set is $40, so this set offers a great value, which is great to see in the exclusives program again.
