1 review for Stormtrooper #09

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

Each wave of the 6” Black Series has featured an armored character, and wave 3 brings the classic vanilla Stormtrooper in all its shiny glory. The Stormtrooper includes the standard Imperial E-11 blaster, the same sculpt previously included with the Sandtrooper and Han Solo. The blaster fits properly in the holster, which is more than the 3 3/4” Stormtroopers of the past decade can say. He’s also packed with the DLT-20A rifle – IG-88 is the only character to have such a weapon in the films but Stormtroopers occasionally use them in video games. The trooper also looks good with the Sandtrooper’s DLT-19.

Since Hasbro likes to reuse parts to save costs, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Stormtrooper includes many of the same parts from wave 1’s Sandtrooper (The Black Series, 2013). The midsection, belt, and lower left leg are all clearly new due to the difference in armor from the Tunisia location shooting to the England set shooting. The 3 3/4” scale Sandtroopers just wear the same armor as the Stormtroopers, so kudos to Hasbro for making the effort to differentiate here. The Stormtrooper has thicker pins in his arm joints and more rounded feet with different peg holes, so it’s a little difficult to tell what’s new and what’s just slightly modified. The helmet’s new paint reflects the armor’s differences, and the black mouthpiece is less bulbous and the space between the eye lenses is less rounded, so it appears that the helmet is at least a modified sculpt. One piece that is definitely identical is the chest, which still features the hole on the back meant for the Sandtrooper’s backpack. The bad news is that it looks cheap; the good news is that the figure can thus wear the gear and double as a clean Sandtrooper.

Basically, if you like the Sandtrooper (and you should), you’ll like the Stormtrooper. Sloppy paint (note the “mouth” grill on my sample), the glaring backpack hole, and a lack of accessories hold the figure back from being perfect, but it’s still pretty great. The armored figures have proven to be the most popular in the line so far, so thankfully Hasbro is bringing this figure out for another release with wave 4 – be sure to pick it up when you can.
