1 review for Luke Skywalker #02

Hasbro’s last take on this look for Luke Skywalker (Hoth Battle Gear – The Vintage Collection, 2012) was a great update to an iconic outfit, but face-covering scarf meant it was only scene-specific to the opening moments of The Empire Strikes Back, before Luke unwraps his scarf and removes his goggles. If you thought that was the most scene-specific they could possibly get with this figure, think again! In the film, Luke’s goggles fall off his head when the wampa swats him and he tumbles to the ground—but this figure includes the goggles and the scars. When Hasbro showed this figure at Toy Fair 2014, he didn’t have painted scars, and the newer Mission Series and 6” figures feature scars but no goggles. So this figure is only accurate for less than a second of screen time—not that most fans will care, but it’s a strange choice.

The body is reused from the 2012 figure, making Luke’s head the only newly-sculpted item in this entire wave. The somewhat bulky shoulders remain, but his articulation means he can look great riding a tauntaun. As a rule, The Black Series features worse paint jobs than The Vintage Collection did, so it’s not surprising to see that this Luke ditches many of the smaller details from the 2012 figure’s right shoulder, left wrist, chest, and belt. His colors are more vibrant overall, though a comparison with previous figures shows that Hasbro apparently can’t make up their mind on what colors he should be. The lightsaber hilt plugs into his belt, the blaster fits in his holster, and his lightsaber is ready to dismember some hungry snow beasts.

This is Hasbro’s seventh unique release of Luke in Hoth gear, and the third to specifically feature wampa-induced damage. The previous two damaged figures (released in 1998 and 2003) both included torn clothing and a scarf that could flip upside-down to allow Luke to properly hang in the wampa’s cave; this new version doesn’t. It’s nice to have a version of this sculpt that doesn’t have to have his face obscured, but the limitations are frustrating and take away from a nice piece. Had Hasbro left off the scars as originally intended, I’d rate this figure higher, but accuracy issues aside, it’s still pretty good.
