Last night I decided to watch Empire Strikes Back, so I popped it in my VCR, and began to view. I did notice a few things, and was wondering what evertyone else thought. Here it goes:

    1. Do you think that Lucas will eventually replace the original holo of the Emperor with a newer version with Ian McDiarmind, and his voice?

    2. While on the topic of holograms. . . do you think he will retouch the other holo’s existing in ESB. . . namely Vader?

    3. At the end of the film, while on the Executor. . . I noticed something that has evaded me all these years. Is there a sequence in which the negatives were reversed? When Vader and Piett are talking about the hyperdrive on the Falcon being deactivated, and it being in range shortly, I belive the negative is reversed. In this scene ALL of the Imperial officers have their rank badges on the right of their chest. As well all know, the officers have their rank badges on the left side, and this is the only instance that I know of where thy are on the right.

    4. I am going to go back and watch it again tonight, but I couldn’t remember if Piett’s rank badge changes during the film. We all know Captain Piett becomes an Admiral when Ozzel is relieved of his duties by Vader. I forgot to check if his rank badge reflects this change. It is a minor detail, and it completely slipped my mind until I saw the ‘reversed badge’ scene

Just wondering who else has noticed these tidbits, and what your thoughts were on McDiarmind appearing in any future releases of the film.

    1. Hopefully, Ian McDiarmind will be edited into the DVD release of ESB. Lucas should at least use McDiarmind as the hologram. But, if he is reshooting the scene, he could show Palpatine in his throne room while conversing with Vader. I hear this ties in to Shadows of the Empire as well.

    2. Well, they are in an asteroid field, so the reception isn’t that good. I think it is ok the way it is, but if the holograms end up being re-edited, I won’t make a fuss unless he does something like make Greedo shoot first again.

    3. They must have flipped the negatives like you said. I’ll have to watch ESB again to see.

    4. Yeah, I need to watch it again as well.

Rougue II, I agree about the holos in the asteroid field. . . they shouldn’t be redone. The staticness of them is authentic, and makes good sense. I was leaning more to the holo of Vader in the AT-AT. It is a minute detail, but if Lucas had to tinker with the film. . . it could be upgraded.

As far as A New Hope. . . yeah. . . Greedo needs to be fixed. But looking at that film, George may re-do alot. Just look at how far the digital technology has come since its release (hell, look at the improvements sence Menace!!!) He may decide to improve Jabba, being that he looks older in Menace, and the flow of growth will be odd watching all six movies in continuation. I think he may even re-do Phantom Yoda, after the success he had with the digital Clones Yoda, and make him mor Yoda-esque.

Upgrading Vader’s hologram in the AT-AT wouldn’t be bad.

Yes, CGI has come a long way over the past few years…There is a big difference in the Classic Trilogy SE CG to the CG in Episode 1. Then, ATOC and Lord of the Rings come out and blow them all away. You almost forget Golem and Yoda are animations. I think we’ve discussed the other things we would change in the Special Editions in another thread, so I’ll leave it at that.

    A Fanboy’s dream…
I would like GL to explain how all those Bounty Hunters showed up in the middle of nowhere. I know it is explained in EU, but I want to hear his story. Just a quick little 5 minute scene is all I ask.

I would ask for more Battle of Hoth footage, but after ATOC, I have changed my mind.

Remeber that Vader’s holo transmission is also passing thru the rebel’s energy shield. While I don’t think that anywhere it specifically states that it affects transmissions like that, it could be causing the interferance. The only holo in my opinion that needs changed, is the O.L.M.E. Emperor.

Ian McDirmand is gonna confirmed to appear in E3. And it’s strongly rumored that Lucas is going to film some shots for the OT while E3 filming is going on. So hopefully they can stick Ian in some old Palpy makeup and film him. :)

I would like to see McDiarmid as the hologram simply for continuity’s sake. It’s not anything Clive Revill or the old lady with the upside-down monkey eyes did, just that the Emp is played by someone significantly different-looking and -sounding in the next 4 films.

I don’t have a problem with any of the other holograms though.

There are TONS of reversed shots in the saga, no film so far has escaped that fate as far as I know, so I don’t think there’s a reason to start messing with that stuff now. If Lucas goes back and changes 1, he should change ’em all.

I don’t think he’ll mess with the flipped shots, JT. After all, he left the shot of Obi-Wan with his braid on the wrong side in E1. And he had the chance for the DVD release to actually flip it. But it wasn’t done, just because he decided not to. Probably just a little easter egg left in there for the fans. :)

I was just looking at ANH and caught a flipped frame during the final battle. It’s in the control room on Yavin with Leia and the guy with the handlebar mustache. I can only speculate, but it appears as though the shot was flipped because the way the sequence was edited, it was “necessary” for Leia to be looking left to right in the second (and reversed) shot. I need to look at it again to figure out the flow.

These things aren’t generally “mistakes” as it takes genuine effort to flip the shot so Lucas deciding “not to” in the above example probably has less to do with pleasing the fans and more to do with his original reason for doing it in the first place.

You never know. Hopefully when ESB comes out on DVD we’ll hear exactly why. But I think you’re correct. I believe they only built one side of the Imperial Star Destroyer Bridge. They would just split screen the image for the other half. I think that they wanted Vader looking out the opposite port window, and since it wasn’t built they flipped the shot so he would be on that side.

A lot of movies feature these sorts of things, and most of the time they arn’t easily noticable. Hell, I never would have originally noticed it, except for the fact that the Imperial Officer’s tunics give it away. The seam and rank bars are on the wrong side. But hell, I didn’t even notice it until I got the Laserdiscs in the early 90’s. :)

Just like what the Audio Commentary for E1 says, the “Pathetic Lifeforms” shot on Tatooine isn’t actually flipped. They had planned to flip it, even going to the trouble to stick Obi-Wan’s braid on the incorrect side. But then they never did the flipping, so we have Obi-Wan with his braid on the wrong side. Lucas should have just chopped the braid off with CGI, and attached it to the correct side. :)

I noticed the Imperial Officer’s rank on the wrong side a Long time ago…back when I used to watch ESB everyday after school. I’ve seen that movie so many times…I was easily quoting the dialogue from all scenes (sound effects and all) when I was 10. I never understood why the ranks were on the wrong side until I heard someone mentioning that the frame had been flipped. The other flipped frame that bugs me is the one with Luke on the speederbike in ROTJ…and his glove is on his left hand instead of his right. Noticed that one too…a long time ago. Still bugs me to this day!
